Expert Insights on Wedding Planning: An Interview with KC Photography

Planning a wedding can be one of the most exciting yet challenging times in a couple’s life. To help navigate this journey, we had the pleasure of speaking with Kacey from KC Photography, a seasoned wedding photographer with over 250 weddings under her belt. Kacey shared valuable insights on common mistakes, essential tips, and memorable moments from her experience in the industry. Here’s what she had to say. 1. What common mistakes do you see couples making when planning a wedding? Kacey mentioned that one of the most common mistakes couples make is underestimating the time needed for portraits, particularly family formals. “It’s important to talk with your photographer and/or planner and plan out a timeline for the wedding day that is realistic,” she advised. Another frequent oversight is failing to communicate which family members are needed for portraits beforehand. This often results in a scramble on the wedding day to track down missing relatives. 2. What’s the best tip you have for a couple planning a wedding when hiring a service like yours? “Book a photographer who you KNOW and LIKE,” Kacey emphasized. She stressed the importance of connecting with your photographer before the big day, ideally through an engagement session. This builds trust and ensures you’re comfortable with the person who will be capturing your special moments. “You can redo a photoshoot… but NOT a wedding,” she added, highlighting the significance of choosing someone you truly resonate with. 3. What don’t couples know about your business that they need to know? A touching revelation from Kacey was that she cries at every single wedding she photographs. “I love LOVE and wedding days, and I absolutely love capturing every minute of it,” she shared. This heartfelt approach to her work underscores the dedication and care she brings to each wedding, making it clear that her role is much more than just a job—it’s a passion. 4. What questions should couples be asking that they don’t know to ask? Kacey pointed out two crucial questions couples often overlook: the timing of their ceremony and the organization of family formals. She recommends scheduling your ceremony as late as possible to avoid long gaps between the ceremony and reception. Additionally, she advises couples to create a detailed list of family formals ahead of time, involving both moms in the process to ensure no one is left out. “If your list is organized, it doesn’t take long,” she noted, stressing the importance of preparation. 5. What is your best piece of advice for couples planning a wedding? “Have YOUR wedding,” Kacey urged. She encouraged couples to focus on what makes them happy, rather than trying to please others or conform to traditional expectations. Whether it’s opting out of a receiving line or choosing non-traditional desserts, Kacey’s advice is to make the day truly your own. 6. What’s the most unusual wedding you ever did? Kacey recalled a unique wedding where the groomsmen wore camouflage suits with bright orange vests, and the bridesmaids wore bright orange dresses with camouflage accents. The challenge came when the couple requested photos in the woods, where the camouflage outfits blended in a bit too well. Despite the difficulties, Kacey was able to capture the couple’s vision by taking photos in a nearby field. 7. What was the most memorable wedding you ever worked, and why? One wedding that stands out in Kacey’s memory is that of Ellis and Taylor. Taylor’s father, who had lost a leg, surprised her on the wedding day by walking down the aisle after months of working with a physical therapist. The moment was filled with emotion, and Kacey captured the tears of joy as Taylor turned around to see her father walking towards her. “The selfless love of a father to his daughter… I’ll never forget it,” Kacey shared, recalling the powerful connection she witnessed that day. Closing Thoughts Planning a wedding is a deeply personal journey, and having a trusted, passionate photographer like Kacey by your side can make all the difference.
