Insights on Wedding Planning: Advice from Kim Kingsland at Berkshire Ridge

Planning a wedding can be a whirlwind, and who better to get advice from than Kim Kingsland, a seasoned venue owner at Berkshire Ridge? We recently had the pleasure of featuring Kim on our social media, and she shared some valuable tips and insights for couples planning their big day. Here’s a recap of the conversation, highlighting her responses to some key questions: What common mistakes do you see couples making when planning a wedding? 1.Unnecessary Guest Gifts: Couples often spend money on small gifts for guests, like candles or trinkets, which guests rarely take home. The exception? Koozies—guests always seem to love and use them!
2.Long Gaps Between Ceremony and Dinner: If there’s more than a two-hour gap between the ceremony and dinner, it’s essential to offer a cocktail hour or appetizers to keep guests engaged. A good photographer can wrap up photos within an hour or so to avoid long delays.
3.Lengthy Events: Ceremonies starting in the early afternoon and ending late at night can be too long for most guests. For a 2 PM ceremony, consider wrapping up by 8:30 or 9 PM. If you want a longer reception, start the ceremony later in the day. What’s the best tip you have for a couple planning a wedding when hiring a service like yours? 1.Choose a Venue Within Your Budget: Look for a venue that fits your dream and budget.
2.Prioritize Communication: Early communication with the venue is key. At Berkshire Ridge, there are no limits on emails or questions, and quick response times help couples feel supported throughout the planning process.
3.Be Aware of Extra Charges: Always ask if there are any additional fees for vendors or services.
4.Check Vendor Flexibility: Make sure your venue allows you to choose your own caterers, DJs, photographers, etc. What don’t couples know about your business that they need to know? Couples often don’t realize how much work goes into resetting seating arrangements or cleaning up after the wedding. At Berkshire Ridge, we allow couples to move tables and chairs, but they are responsible for putting them back. We also permit next-day cleanups if there’s no event, though most couples prefer to get help from family and friends the night of. What questions should couples be asking that they don’t know to ask? 1.Bridal Suite Timing: Always ask how early you can access the bridal suite. Some venues have strict time limits, but at Berkshire Ridge, couples can come in as early as needed to ensure a relaxed, unrushed day.
2.Open Communication: Some venues limit communication after booking, which can cause stress. Make sure to choose a venue that encourages open, ongoing communication. What is your best piece of advice for couples planning a wedding? Weddings are full of preparation, but things won’t always go exactly as planned. Whether it’s a small hiccup or a big surprise, mentally prepare to roll with the punches. Almost every wedding has some kind of mishap, but in the end, it makes for great memories. Stay in the moment, relax, and enjoy your special day with those who love you the most. What’s the most unusual wedding you ever did? Recently, a bride wore a black wedding dress, which was a first! It was stunning and added a unique flair to the entire event. What was the most memorable wedding you ever worked, and why? One of the most memorable weddings involved a health scare. During the ceremony, a grandparent nearly fainted and quietly had to be escorted out, but thankfully both grandparents were able to return to the reception later that night. The couple was unaware of the drama, which was handled discreetly, and the night went on without a hitch.
