Vendor Spotlight: Kim Kingsland of Berkshire Ridge Wedding Venue on Creating Unforgettable Experiences

At Abell DJ Company, we have the honor of working alongside some of the best wedding professionals in the St. Louis area. One of those is Kim Kingsland, the owner and operator of Berkshire Ridge, a stunning wedding venue in Blackwell, Missouri. We recently caught up with Kim to ask her a few insightful questions about her experience in the wedding industry, and her answers are packed with advice every engaged couple should read.
What Common Mistakes Do Couples Make When Planning a Wedding?
Kim’s years of experience have given her a clear perspective: many couples try to do too much themselves, particularly when it comes to food and music. While saving money is understandable, DIY catering and relying on a playlist instead of a professional DJ can leave families overwhelmed and important moments falling flat.
“I’ve seen families scrambling to make food, figure out how to serve and clean up—when they should be enjoying the day,” Kim shared. “The same goes for music. A skilled DJ (like Chris Abell, for example) does much more than press play—they manage the energy and flow of the entire evening.”
Her advice is simple: Invest in professional catering and entertainment. Those two decisions shape the entire guest experience.
What’s the Best Tip for Couples When Booking a Venue?
“Don’t just focus on how the space looks—focus on the experience that comes with it,” Kim said.
She encourages couples to ask the right questions before booking:
- How responsive is the venue manager?
- Will I have time for multiple walkthroughs?
- Can I get in early the day of the wedding?
- Are there any hidden fees?
At Berkshire Ridge, Kim makes accessibility and communication a top priority. Couples are welcome to visit as often as needed, and she responds to questions quickly—often within minutes.
Kim is also personally present at nearly every event, offering hands-on support from the moment the bridal party arrives until the very last guest leaves. “Vendors tell me it’s rare for an owner to be this involved, but I love it. I build relationships with my couples. I want them to feel relaxed and supported throughout the entire process.”
What Don’t Most Couples Know About Berkshire Ridge?
Many couples are surprised by how personally involved Kim is. “You’re not just renting a venue—you’re gaining a partner,” she said. Her goal is for every couple to feel confident and cared for on their big day.
What Questions Should Couples Be Asking?
While many couples ask about capacity and aesthetics, Kim urges them to dig into the logistics:
- What time can we arrive?
- How do we communicate with you throughout planning?
- What’s included in the package—and what’s extra?
“Knowing these details early prevents surprises later and keeps the planning process smooth.”
Best Advice for Planning a Wedding
“Start by booking your venue,” Kim emphasized. “That date drives every other decision.” She also recommends booking vendors early and keeping a planner or notebook to stay organized.
And most importantly—when the big day arrives—“Let go of the planning and be present. The joy is in the moments, not the logistics.”
Most Unique Wedding at Berkshire Ridge
One of Kim’s favorite weddings involved a pre-ceremony greeting line, where the couple personally welcomed each guest with drinks and hugs. “It was something I’d never seen before, and it left such a meaningful impression.”
Guests loved the warm, personalized experience, and the couple later told Kim it was their favorite part of the entire day.
Most Memorable Weddings
From a bride arriving on horseback to a tornado and rainbow occurring simultaneously, Berkshire Ridge has seen it all. But Kim’s most sentimental memory is the very first wedding ever held at the venue—her daughter’s.
In just three and a half months, what was once a hay barn became a full-fledged venue, all in time for a family celebration.
Since then, she’s witnessed countless heartfelt, humorous, and unforgettable moments—from fainting grandparents (who recovered fine and laughed about it) to couples bringing donkeys, fireworks, and custom family traditions to the property.
Every wedding adds to the magic that makes Berkshire Ridge so special.
